my preliminary task

I have used a fade out at the beginning to signify that my opening sequence has just started and to connote that nothing happened before. Once Mica has walked into the room I used a close panning shot of her walking which connotes she could be the antagonist and because the viewers can only see nothing of the character but their leg restricting them from identifying the person it connotes a sense of suspicion and mischief. Furthermore whilst she is walking the music kick in and is quiet slow creating tension making the audience now believe that she is the antagonist of the film .

When the camera moves away from Mica and shows a mid shot of charlotte washing up at the sink it automatically connotes that whatever is going to happen is going happen between these two characters. I have deliberately left the tense music playing till she walks over to the radio as because I want the viewers to establish that she is the protagonist. Charlotte turns on the radio and the song ‘a thousand miles’ by Vanessa Carlton. I have chosen this song because it up beat fast paced and lively connoting that charlotte has no idea there is someone behind and everything from her perspective is normal.

The camera then cuts back to the restricted character where the tense music rises reconstructing the tension and the mysterious atmosphere the character creates; however while the tense music is play the lively song by Vanessa is still going on connoting the character is in the room and can see charlotte. The two characters come into one shot which is called a two shot and the non diagetic tense music becomes more louder as the lively one sets down, this connotes that something is going to happen at this point and gets the audience ready to jump.

When the character that is supposed to be the antagonist touches charlotte she jumps and drops the plate on to the floor. I have used match-on action to show this shot. As you can see when charlotte is shocked she drops something the next shot which is a cutaway, shows the viewers the plate dropping on to the floor. This is a cheap surprise and I have used it to make the audience feel as if the know what is going on but the really don’t.
